A simple setting can make a big difference in player value and draft approach. Here's a few common settings to watch out for: 1) Is your league a points per reception (PPR) league? The players most affected by the PPR setting are Running Backs. A top of the line PPR Running Back will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-50 receptions in a season. A freak of nature like Ray Rice could have even more (78 for Rice in 2009). At the other end of the spectrum you'll find some quality backs who take a ding when it comes to PPR. For example, Michael Turner had only 5 receptions in 11 games last year. Shonn Greene had 0 in 14 games. 2) How much are Passing TD's worth? In many leagues, Quarterbacks tend to be the highest scoring players and in most standard leagues their Passing TD's are worth 4 points. If your league goes a step further and rewards them 6 points per TD, then their value goes up. 3) Is your league touchdown only? Most leagues award points for yardage. Typically, they require 10-15 yards per point for rushing and receiving and around 25 yards per point passing. Some ignore the yardage or value it significantly less than others, requiring more yardage to get a point. This puts a strong emphasis on touchdowns. If that's the case then you have to assess players more on their ability to finish and get in the end zone. There are other variations and some league owners get pretty creative. Make sure you do your homework and understand how your scoring system works and what that means for the players you draft. |
