Panthers | Steve Smith said he was targeted by New Orleans : Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said that New Orleans Saints players were encouraged to go after him. 'I actually had an altercation with a guy who told me firsthand,' Smith said, although he didnt name the player. 'I was going out of bounds, and the guy went for my ankle. I said, 'Hey, man, cut that out.' Hes like, 'Well, we get fined if we dont go after your legs when you go out of bounds.' And actually this past year, this last game when we played them, I had a little conversation with Gregg Williams He took responsibility, he was saying it wasnt right, but thats who he was.'

Panthers | Steve Smith contract update : Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith's contract extension is a three-year deal with the team holding an option for the fourth year and could be worth as much as $37.8 million. The deal includes $16.8 million in guaranteed money. Smith received a $10 million signing bonus. In addition to the signing bonus, hell also earn $1 million in base salary. Smith had been scheduled to earn $7.75 million in the final year of his contract. The new deal gives Smith more money, but he also frees up significant salary cap room for the Panthers, who had less than $500,000 available before this deal.

'Steve has been a difference maker at receiver for us since he's been here,' general manager Marty Hurney said. 'It's always good to keep your core players. Panthers | Cam Newton, Steve Smith hook up at Pro Bowl: Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton hit WR Steve Smith for a 55-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Pro Bowl. That was about the biggest highlight of the day for Newton, who managed to complete just 9 of 27 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, including one returned for touchdown. Smith finished with five grabs for 118 yards and the score.
